ABOUT
現代建築的保存在全球均面臨著重大挑戰；尤其「保存」一詞，在過去往往連結著「古物」或「古蹟」，現代建築從興建完成到當下均尚不足百年，從為何要保存？到要如何保存？其實全球都還在摸索中；台灣更是還在發展探索的初期！非常幸運地，2014年台灣中部東海大學校園內的路思義教堂接受到美國蓋提基金會(Getty Foundation)全球啟動的「維持其現代」獎助(“Keeping it Modern” Grant，簡稱KIM)獎助計畫的青睞，成為全球首批、亞洲第一棟接受獎助啟動保存研究的個案，並開始了台灣面對現代建築的保存工作。KIM獎助計畫也像一台剛剛啟動的列車，臺灣有幸藉由路思義教堂登上了列車，也讓台灣的現代建築保存可以與國際上的探索趨勢聯動，並有機會用實際的保存經驗與國際對話。
WHAT'S KIM?
KIM就是蓋提基金會自2014年於全球啟動「維持其現代」獎助計畫(“Keeping it Modern” Grant)的簡稱，計畫本身鎖定近現代建築發展過程中那些曾大膽啟用新構築材料、營建技術、結構系統的經典建築物，邀請管理者提出保存研究計畫，期許能找到示範性的處理方式與手段，影響同一個時期的相關建築物。而KIM獎助計畫中核心的「保存管理規劃」 (Conservation Management Planning，CMP) 理念，更著重於將建築物放回其所處的歷史地理時空中檢視，重新定位其重要性。期許個別的個案都能夠透過文化重要性的重新認定，發現面對所有權人、使用者、管理者、乃至於不全面相關的社會大眾的詮釋方式，在廣泛普遍的認同中，讓現代建築或其所在場所的整體保存成為一種共識，並進而影響長期使用、維護管理的政策與機制。
ABOUT THE CONVENING
KIM計畫從啟動第一年起，即非常看重執行團隊之間的經驗分享與彼此交流，也期許在分享交流中發展出新的推動與維護方法。由KIM計畫的第一年開始，即透過London Convening分享了第一批受獎助團隊與所有權人、使用者、社會大眾互動並爭取支持的經驗。接續其後，團隊在2018年於北非的摩洛哥舉辦了第二次的Morocco Convening，從四年來受獎助的43個個案中挑選團隊進行經驗分享。
很榮幸地，2019年底蓋提基金會委請台灣路思義教堂的保存研究團隊籌劃2020-21年的Taiwan Convening；此活動因疫情而延宕至2024年初舉辦。東海大學團隊從已經於2020年終止的KIM計畫的77個受獎助個案中，找到了來自美國、澳大利亞、日本、義大利、土耳其、印度和智利等七個國家可以與臺灣的現代建築或場所保存對話的八個個案之經營團隊，於2024年的2月23~25日三天，舉辦為期三天的Taiwan Convening 2024國際工作營。屆時，不同國家的學者專家，將與國內保存第一線的官員、文史工作者、保存團體、建築師及關心現代建築保存的朋友一起分享在不同的文化與地理空間中的寶貴經驗。東海大學建築系也將以其如何由單一一棟路思義教堂的保存研究，擴及到校園內重要經典建築物的文化資產身份申請，乃至於整個校園的「文化景觀」的文化資產身份指定的經驗，以及搭配難得的路思義教堂六十年來第一次的全面修繕維護的機會打開大眾理解現代建築的理解窗口所做的種種努力與嘗試，以工作營的方式，嘗試帶出如何以多元的「保存管理規劃」方法趨近文化重要性的認定與保存的核心議題。

ABOUT
The preservation of modern architecture faces major challenges around the world. In the past, the term 'preservation' was often linked to 'antiquities' or 'historic sites.' However, considering that modern buildings are less than a century old, questions arise: Why should they be preserved, and how can it be achieved? In reality, the entire world is still exploring these questions, and Taiwan is in the early stages of development and exploration.
Fortunately, in 2014, the Luce Memorial Chapel on the campus of Tunghai University in Central Taiwan received the 'Keeping it Modern' Grant (KIM) from the Getty Foundation in the United States. Favored by this grant program, it became one of the first cases in Taiwan, it also initiating the preservation of modern architecture in Taiwan. The KIM Grant Program allows Taiwan’s modern architecture to be associated with international heritage preservation, adding an entirely new dimension to Taiwan's building heritage narrative.
WHAT'S KIM?
KIM is the abbreviation of the "Keeping it Modern" grant program launched globally by the Getty Foundation in 2014. The program itself targets those who have boldly used new building materials in the development process of modern architecture. For classic buildings with construction technology and structural systems, managers are invited to propose preservation research plans, hoping to find exemplary treatment methods and means that will affect related buildings of the same period. The "Conservation Management Planning (CMP)" concept at the core of the KIM grant program focuses more on putting the building back into its historical and geographical time and space to examine and reposition its importance. It is hoped that in individual cases, through the re-identification of cultural importance, the interpretation methods for owners, users, managers, and even the public who are not fully related can be found, and modern architecture or other buildings can be recognized in a broad and universal way. The overall preservation of the place has become a consensus, which in turn affects the policies and mechanisms for long-term use, maintenance, and management.
ABOUT THE CONVENING
Since the first year of its launch, the KIM project has attached great importance to experience sharing and exchanges between the execution teams, and it is also expected to develop new promotion and maintenance methods through sharing and exchanges. Since the first year of the KIM project, London Convening has been used to share the experience of the first batch of funded teams in interacting with owners, users, and the public and gaining support. Subsequently, the team held the second Morocco Convening in Morocco, North Africa in 2018, selecting teams from 43 cases that had received awards over the past four years to share their experiences.
With great honor, in late 2019, the Getty Foundation commissioned the preservation research team of Taiwan's Luce Memorial Chapel to plan the 2020-21 Taiwan Convening. Due to the pandemic, the event was postponed and is now scheduled to take place in early 2024. From the 77 award-winning cases under the KIM project, which concluded in 2020, the team at Tunghai University identified eight cases from the United States, Australia, Japan, Italy, Turkey, India, and Chile. These cases provide opportunities for dialogues on the preservation of modern architecture or sites in Taiwan. The operational teams for these cases will host a three-day international workshop, Taiwan Convening 2024, from February 23 to 25, 2024.
During this event, scholars and experts from different countries will share their valuable experiences in cultural and geographical contexts with frontline preservation officials, cultural historians, preservation groups, architects, and individuals interested in modern architecture preservation in Taiwan. Tunghai University's Department of Architecture will also showcase its efforts, starting from the preservation research of the Luce Memorial Chapel and extending to the cultural heritage status applications for important classical buildings on campus. Additionally, the university will share its experience in obtaining cultural heritage status designation for the entire campus "cultural landscape." The workshop will highlight the various efforts and attempts made, including the rare opportunity for the comprehensive maintenance and repair of the Luce Memorial Chapel after sixty years. The goal is to open a window for public understanding of modern architecture and explore how diverse "preservation management planning" approaches can address the core issues of cultural significance determination and preservation.
